Estate Timeline

Now in the 7th generation of family ownership, the estate has been in the family for almost 250 years:

1772 – 1882

The wealthy and well-educated Hinterroecker family took over the estate in 1772 with its vineyards, woods and orchard reaching as far as the Danube. A descendant of Hinterroecker became mayor of Spitz. Son Johann Nepomuk (born 1820) decided to go to Australia as a missionary. The challenges of his journey and his work were published in the book “Johann Nepomuk Hinterroecker – Ein Lebensbild” in 1875. His son Josef ran the estate in Spitz. Anna, one of his six daughters, was entrusted with the management of the estate.

1882- 1926

Around 1850, Anna married Kaspar Salomon from St. Michael, with Papal consent. Kaspar used his relations with his Hungarian relatives and was the first to cultivate the apricot commercially in the Wachau. Today it is a Wachau trademark. The Salomons had two daughters: Josefine succumbed to the charm of the officer Erwin Kollinski.

1926-1959

Daughter Anny took over the estate and specialised in the cultivation of fine fruit, including pears and apricots. She married a nobleman from St. Pölten, Julius Edler von Fuchs, auf Roecknitz und Treben, who later became a judge at the district court in Spitz. Today, the Fuchs family crest can be found in the logo of the Barock-Landhof Burkhardt.
Anny and Julius had two daughters, Edith and Helga. Edith married Fritz Salomon, owner of the vineyard Undhof in Krems. One of her sons, Bertold Salomon, followed the footsteps of Johann Nepomuk Hinterroecker and founded the Salomon Estate in the same area of Norwood, Australia. Helga attended the Obstbau Akademie in Klosterneuburg and took over the estate.

1959 – 2000

Helga married Friedrich (‘Friedl’) Burkhardt from Bavaria, whom she met in 1944 during a dance evening. Due to the war they had to wait several anxious years for their marriage. Dr. Prof. med. Burkhardt was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his scientific services as a microbiologist. Helga and Friedl began extensive renovations in the fifties and laid the foundations for the conversion of the house into a tourist enterprise in 1964.

The property changed hands to his son Dr. Michael Burkhardt, who worked on several continents as Human Resources Director and member of the Supervisory Board. Since then, his wife Gisela has run the hotel as the host, together with her small team of loyal employees. Recently the hotel was renovated with the aim of combining authenticity and tradition with modern comfort and sustainability. The eighth generation is ready to start with daughter Kerstin, who successfully completed her studies in international hotel management in 2015.

2025 –

From 2025, Kerstin Burkhardt and her husband Luke will take over the management of the hotel. Therefore the eighth generation is now taking over with Kerstin, who has a degree in international hotel management, and Luke, who has a background in banking. With their small team of employees on site, the two want to ensure the preservation of the building and business that their parents and grandparents have carefully built up.
