Baroque Glamour
The Benedictine Abbey of Melk, an architectural masterpiece, situated on a rock above the town of the same name, is visible from afar at the entrance to the Wachau.
The largest monastery of the Austrian Baroque period houses numerous treasures, including the “Melker Kreuz” with the alleged splinter of the Cross of Jesus and the legendary library, which in Umberto Ecco´s “the name of the rose” even entered world literature.
Krems – Where Old Meets New
Krems, at the other end of the Wachau, is repeatedly ranked as one of the best Austrian towns to live in: A historic ensemble of houses, the winding old town, cobbled alleys, in between shopping in boutiques and small stores. With their innovative architecture, the university and art mile create new ideas and a lively atmosphere.
Here you will also find Austria’s only caricature museum with the “Enfant Terrible” of the German-speaking caricature scene, Otto Deix, who presents his wonderfully evil pictures here.

Traditional Folk Dances
Traditional folk dances, concerts of the music clubs or religious folklore are celebrated by the Wachau people first and foremost for themselves. Therefore all the celebrations are not aimed at tourists, but pleasantly genuine. For women, the traditional costumes and artistic gold bonnets are the defining features; for men, the black-brown Kalmuck pattern of the Janker jacket. Music creates a festive atmosphere, and of course wine is a must.
Klang trifft Kulisse
A delight for eyes and ears – from modern performances, open-air concerts to comedy – the finest cultural experiences are part of the Wachau’s programme every year.
A selection of special highlights are the international baroque days in Melk, which offer the highest musical enjoyment with stars from all over the world. The Schloss Grafenegg Festival presents top international artists and the world’s best open-air orchestras in a unique and inspiring atmosphere.
Theatrical highlights are presented at the Wachau festival in Weißenkirchen in the wonderful inner courtyard of the Teisenhoferhof. You can experience spectacular musical revues at the Melk Summer Festival against the backdrop of the monastery.
In the Schubertiade in Dürnstein or at the festival “Glatt und Verkehrt” you can experience top-class artists which play both traditional and contemporary music from different countries.
