Hand-Picked Grapes

The Wachau is regarded as the most famous wine-growing region in Austria and one of the best in the world when it comes to white wine, alongside Burgundy, Rheingau and Moselle.

The small wine-growing region has an astonishing variety of sites with different climatic and geological conditions, which offer the best conditions for complex Veltliner and Riesling wines.

The dry stone walls still shape the Wachau landscape today. All work in the vineyard has to be done by hand, which is expensive and makes the plants on the stone terraces so precious. Wines from the top winegrowers such as Hirtzberger, Jamek, Knoll or Pichler have a worldwide reputation and can be enjoyed on our sun terrace with a view of the vineyards.

Gourmet Mile of Austria

The fact that the Wachau is not only a paradise for wine lovers is well known to food connoisseurs. The latest results in various restaurant guides such as Falstaff, Gault Millau, A la carte or the Schlemmer Atlas confirm this: The Wachau is often referred to as the “Gourmet Mile of Austria”, the culinary variety and the density of the offer are impressive.

You can treat yourself to culinary delights at the riverside promenades in Krems, for example in the Wellenspiel, in Weißenkirchen at Heinzle you can try various fish variations or in Spitz you can enjoy Wachauer apricot pancakes or cakes at the Strandcafé . Of course, we are happy to advise you on the individual restaurants.

Wine Taverns

In “Heurigen” (wine taverns), winegrowers serve fresh wines and Wachauer delicacies in their courtyards, which you must taste during your stay!

More than a dozen can be reached by foot from the hotel in Spitz. In Austria, the right of winegrowers to serve their own wine without a special licence goes back to a circular order issued by Emperor Joseph II in 1784. The Heurigen offer a good occasion to discover the brands Steinfeder, Federspiele and Smaragd and invite you to round off an eventful day with wine and Wachauer specialities.
