12th Century<\/span><\/p>\n

The estate is one of Spitz’s oldest buildings: Gothic arches and a Romanesque archway reflect its age. The property was enclosed by high protective walls and can be seen in old pictures of the town, e.g. in the Spitz church. As a grape harvesting farm for the Niederalteich monastery, it was used not only for residential and economic purposes, but also for defence. Embrasures in the interior of the building in the almost meter-thick natural stone walls indicate this.<\/span><\/p>\n

When the estate was slowly transformed into a central administrative site, large parts were transformed into baroque style and decorated with a castle-like fa\u00e7ade. The middle floor was equipped with representative rooms. The stately character is still evident today. In the lower rooms there were wine cellars and stables for horses, which had to pull cargo ships up the Danube.<\/span><\/p>\n

Later the house was used for agricultural purposes. The rooms were also used for other purposes, such as a vinegar factory, fruit deposit, wine production or the storage of salt, which was transported on the Danube and later sold in the Waldviertel. This can also be deduced from the professions of the owners of the estate, which are recorded in the family chronicles. <\/span><\/p>\n

While the cultivation of grapes for wine and vinegar production has always been the focus of the agricultural activities, in the 18th century a second pillar was created with the cultivation of fine fruit, especially apricots and pears. The gardens belonging to the estate stretched from the house to the Danube.<\/span><\/p>\n

Extensive renovation work began in the 1950s. As early as 1964, the foundations were laid for the conversion of the house into a tourist enterprise. Recently the house was renovated with the aim of combining authenticity and tradition with modern comfort and sustainability.
